Tired of Geese? Call the “Experts” and Have them Gassed! (WTF?)

July 5, 2010

Beyond the news of the Gulf Disaster, within the articles, was buried:  Residents Pay to Get Geese Euthanized.

It seems that some of the residents of the Lake Todd community in Bradford, New Hampshire, are upset with geese poop.  Lake Todd resident Dick Matte is interviewed, saying that “It’s very difficult to wake up every morning and literally have pounds of goose poop we have to pick up” (Mr. Matte “literally” chuckles at the end of this remark).  Lynn Montford also is an anti-goose-poop resident.  Apparently, the anti-goose-poop residents contacted the New Hampshire Wildlife “experts.”  After “doing everything they could” (similar quote from Dick Matte – he did everything he could, but WOW — the geese were still there!), the State stepped in and rounded up all of the geese.  The geese were then euthanized / gassed.   (See original article, “Geese Slaughtered on Lake Todd.”)

OK – my thoughts.  These wildlife-is-a-nusance complaints remind me of several scenarios:

  1. People who move to the country to “get away from it,” and then complain about deer eating property owners’ vegetation.  You don’t want deer?  DON’T MOVE THERE!
  2. People who purchase homes next to golf courses / fairways, and perhaps their property is damaged by flying golf balls.  And they decide to sue the golf course.  Hey — if the golf course was there before you moved in … well, I think you should have noticed that!
  3. People who move onto lake property and complain about geese / waterfowl poop.  The odds are that there will be ducks and geese and other waterfowl on and around the lake.  Guess what was there first????

Dick Matte is a dick. How dare he take this action. If one does not like geese or goose poop then stay out of their area ##. Maybe he needs to stay in a gated community.

I understand your comments, as the situation amazed me, too. Hence, the blog post. Thank you for your comment!

FYI…Dick Matte learned of this when Channel 9 came to interview him. He had nothing to do with the gassing. Nieghbors several hundred yards down the lake called the state. The state hired a company to “take care of the birds.” He has lived on the lake for 30 plus years and has peacefully co-existed with the wildlfe. Shame on Channel 9 WMUR for taking advantage and catching a citizen unaware and misrepresenting him.

Thank you for your comment. It’s always interesting to hear “the rest of the story.”
